Why is genital autonomy important to you?

I believe that every person has a right to their own body, as it is the one thing that is truly our own. Being circumcised as an infant has caused me great emotional pain that I wish upon no one else. My own struggle with genital autonomy has brought me to fight for it as a right for all humans.

Why should young people care about genital autonomy if they aren't having kids yet?

The only way we are going to stop non-consensual genital cutting is through preventative action. I think the younger generations are more open to learning about the detriments of these practices, and have the power to change the way cutting cultures view them. Before our generations get caught up in the emotions of becoming a parent, it is important to understand the logical side of many issues surrounding parenting and bodily autonomy.

What's your favorite thing about YWB101?

My favorite thing about YWB101 is the structured freedom it provides for me to develop my own style of activism. YWB101 is an incredibly supportive community that backs most all of the ideas I come up with. Without them I certainly wouldn't be as brave or as prepared as I am now to tackle the challenge of ending non-consensual genital cutting.

What do your friends and family think about your dedication to this cause?

Both my family and friends admire my dedication and remind me how proud they are of me for sticking to my guns and fighting for a cause that they now support after I educated them on genital autonomy.

Best: plane tickets to travel the world

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

An electrical engineer

What's a weird or fun fact about yourself?

At the age of 21 I had reparative laser eye surgery to fix two detaching retinas!

If you could spend a semester abroad anywhere in the world, where would you go?

When I was in college I went abroad to Australia! If I could spend a second semester abroad I would spend time in South Africa.
